Big Bear Eaglet’s “Sunny and Gizmo” Have Left the Nest
Big Bear Lake’s most beloved bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow, have reached an exciting milestone as their eaglets, Sunny and Gizmo, have officially left the nest and taken their first flights into the wild skies of Big Bear.
Their journey, followed closely by thousands through the Friends of Big Bear Valley Eagle Cam, has captivated nature lovers from around the world — and now, the next chapter has begun.
Gizmo Takes the First Leap
On the morning of June 6, Gizmo was seen energetically moving around the nest, flapping her wings on the balcony and exploring nearby limbs. After a strong launch attempt, she unexpectedly stepped off the balcony… and just like that, she was airborne.
With wings wide and strong, she soared confidently across to a nearby tree known as the Simba Tree. It was a beautiful first flight, full of strength, instinct, and promise.
After Gizmo’s Leap, Sunny Takes to the Skies
Soon after Gizmo’s successful departure, her sister Sunny followed. With graceful control, Sunny lifted off the nest and began exploring the surrounding forest. Like Gizmo, she took time to perch, observe, and acclimate — starting her life as a fledgling in the vast wild of Big Bear Lake.
A Wild Lesson from the Night
Shortly after fledging, Gizmo had a startling encounter with a Great Horned Owl. The owl, defending its territory, swooped at her during the night. Though startled, Gizmo didn’t flee—she stood her ground, calling out and flaring her wings. She wasn’t hurt, but it was a powerful lesson in the reality of life in the wild.
