Should you be seeking a relaxing, informative, and enjoyable activity for everyone in the family, a walk through Big Bear Lake’s The Village to experience Sidewalk Astronomy is recommended. This free occasion features telescopes positioned directly on the pavement, offering all attendees the opportunity to gaze at the moon, adjacent planets, and any other celestial bodies visible after dark. Members of the Bear Valley Astronomical Society, local stargazing enthusiasts, will be present to address inquiries and assist you in attempting to capture an image of the moon through the eyepiece, located just outside Barrel 33 on Village Drive.
Sidewalk Astronomy is a free, hands-on stargazing event held right in The Village of Big Bear Lake. Telescopes are set up along the sidewalk outside Barrel 33, giving everyone a chance to see the moon, planets, and stars up close. Volunteers from the local astronomy group are there to answer questions and help you snap a photo through the scope. It’s relaxed, family-friendly, and depends on clear skies to happen.
Sidewalk Astronomy isn’t just about looking up — it’s about bringing the universe a little closer to home. Here’s why locals and visitors love it:
Answer: Not at all. Everything you need to enjoy the night sky is already there. Telescopes are set up and ready, and volunteers will guide you through what you’re seeing. If you want, bring your phone to try snapping a photo of the moon through the scope—it’s surprisingly cool!
Answer: Yes! Kids love it. It’s a fun and easy way for them to see the moon and planets up close. Volunteers are super friendly and happy to answer all their space questions.
Answer: Since this is an outdoor event, clear skies are a must. If it’s cloudy, rainy, super windy, or freezing cold, the event won’t happen that night. It’s always a good idea to check the weather before you head over.
